About Us

Great Writers Make Great Leaders

The Journal of International Service (JIS) is committed to publishing high-level graduate student work on topics related to international relations (IR) and international service. While we welcome submissions reflecting different IR lenses (i.e., historical analysis, international economics, comparative politics, etc.), papers focusing exclusively on domestic politics in a singular country are not appropriate for this outlet. We ask that you review these guidelines before submitting.

Faculty Testimonials

DR. PATRICK THADDEUS JACKSON

Professor, School of International Service

“A lot of the work we do as international affairs professionals — whether as academics, policy analysts, researchers, or advocates — relies on the capacity for clear written communication and argumentation. A good editorial process can help you become a better writer. The lessons you learn by looking at other people’s work and having them look at yours are invaluable whatever career path you are on.”

DR. JORDAN TAMA

Associate Professor, School of International Service

“Getting involved with a journal like JIS can be a great way to hone writing and editing skills, develop leadership experience, and demonstrate policy chops – all of which are highly valued in a variety of international affairs jobs and internships. Serving as co-editor of a journal when I was a graduate student was a helpful building block in my own career. I strongly recommend the experience.”

DR. NANCY SACHS

Professorial Lecturer, School of International Service

“Contributing to the graduate student-run Journal of International Service is a great way both to improve your own writing and to give you resume-quality experience for jobs after graduation. You can either become an editor or work together with expert editors to polish your article for publication. Either way, it’s a win for you!”

DR. MICHAEL SCHROEDER

Associate Dean for Graduate Education, School of International Service

“Clear, concise analytical writing remains high on every employer’s wish list. Whether you envision a future in analysis, advocacy, or programming, a graduate’s CV is more competitive if it demonstrates a commitment to good analysis and writing. Serving as an author or editor for the Journal of International Service does just that. It is a concrete signal that a graduate sought out opportunities to strengthen their own writing and dedicate time to strengthening the writing and analysis of others.”
